Leadership starts when we stop optimizing everything

Optimization is a comfort zone; leadership begins where the playbook ends.

Many teams do not suffer from a lack of effort.
They suffer from dispersion.

Eliyahu Goldratt, through the Theory of Constraints, introduced a brutally simple idea:
the performance of any system is always limited by its main constraint.

In other words:

You can have talented people, strong tools, motivated teams, and solid processes…
if one point is blocking the flow, that point determines the real speed of the whole system.

It is like a 4-lane highway suddenly narrowing into 1 lane.
It does not matter how fast cars move before or after it. The total flow depends only on how fast they can pass through that narrow point.

In leadership, this changes everything.

Because mature leaders do not try to improve everything at once.
They try to see where the system is truly getting stuck.

A few practical examples:

  • It is not a pipeline problem if your team cannot convert.
  • It is not an engagement problem if decisions remain unclear.
  • It is not a talent problem if difficult conversations are constantly avoided.
  • It is not a time problem if energy is being spent on the wrong priorities.

The biggest risk for ambitious leaders is not laziness.
It is non-systemic overactivity.

We move, we launch initiatives, we fill agendas, we improve things everywhere…
but we do not address the one point that is actually limiting progress.

And that is where a dangerous illusion appears:
the feeling of moving forward without increasing the system's real throughput.

A strong leadership question to reflect on this week:

What is the one point currently limiting the real progress of my team or organization?

Not the loudest issue.
Not the most visible issue.
Not the most comfortable issue.
The real constraint.

That is often where leadership truly begins:
not by doing more,
but by seeing more accurately.
