A client opened my eyes to the SCARF Model

What a client taught me about the five social triggers that run every meeting.

In a recent coordination session, one of my clients — a senior leader managing other managers — told me something that struck me. She said: "When my managers assess their teams, I see patterns shaped not just by performance, but by profiles, preferences, even biases. The SCARF Model really helps to describe it."

I didn't know the model, and she introduced it to me. In short, David Rock's SCARF highlights five drivers of human behavior: Status, Certainty, Autonomy, Relatedness, Fairness. Each of these can trigger a reward state (open, creative, collaborative) or a threat state (defensive, survival-driven).

✨ For leaders, it's a simple but powerful checklist: reduce threats, reinforce rewards, and you'll create the conditions for better collaboration and impact.

👉 Which of these five drivers do you see most often in your leadership context?
