Today, we're exploring where control really lies — and how self-awareness can reshape the way we lead, decide, and grow.
🌱 In day-to-day leadership, we often notice that real change starts with a simple question:
Who's really in control — me, or everything around me?
Self-awareness in leadership isn't just about introspection; it's about recognizing where you place control, and how that belief shapes every decision you make.
🌱 Self-Awareness and Leadership: Where Does Control Really Lie?
In leadership, self-awareness is not just about knowing yourself — it's about recognizing where you believe control comes from.
Psychologists call this the Locus of Control.
Do you tend to think that results depend on luck, others, or circumstances? That's an external locus.
Or do you feel that your choices, efforts, and adaptability shape what happens? That's an internal locus.
Neither is inherently "better."
But what truly matters is the ability to move consciously from one to the other — to regain agency when things feel out of reach.
At Luminous, we've observed this dynamic across countless coaching sessions and leadership journeys.
Transformations begin when individuals start to:
1️⃣ Generate awareness — seeing themselves think, act, and react in real time.
2️⃣ Make it visible — leaving a trace of those insights, through words, notes, or shared reflections.
3️⃣ Engage in collective intelligence — using others as mirrors: "they face the same challenges," or "they do it differently — and it works."
4️⃣ Set and measure intentions — making objectives explicit, trackable, and observable.
5️⃣ Journal the journey — using the right interfaces, from paper to digital tools, to anchor change.
And perhaps a sixth element: conceptualization — naming and understanding these principles so that awareness can lead to action.
Because ultimately:
👉 Awareness. Responsibility. Activation.
Everything starts with awareness.
Start a coaching session. And share any feedback. This can trigger a shift in others' locus of control.
